Uses of Artemether

Artemether is used in the treatment of malaria
It is not used to prevent malaria or to treat severe malaria (where it has affected the brain, lungs or kidneys).

Artemether acts by producing free radicals within the malarial parasite, which kills it.

Lumefantrine is used in the treatment of malaria.

Side effects of Lumefantrine

Nausea, Skin rash, Allergic reaction, Altered heart rate, Difficulty in speaking, Chills, Dizziness, Difficulty in swalloing, Shortness of breath, Facial swelling, Lip swelling, Fainting, Fever, Headache, Insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), Loss of appetite, Muscle pain, Joint pain, Sore tongue, Vomiting, Weakness, Fatigue.

How Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet works

Lumefantrine is a weak base that reaches high concentration within the malarial parasite and causes accumulation of toxic heme pigment, which kills it.

Expert advice for Artemether

  • Take artemether tablet with food or drink rich in fat such as milk.  
  • Crush or chew the tablet and swallow it with a glass of water in case of young children.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after taking artemether because you may feel sleep.
  • Do not take artemether if you have severe type of malaria infection.
  • Do not take artemether if you are if you are in first 3 months of pregnancy or breast feeding.

Expert advice for Lumefantrine

  • Lumefantrine should be taken with food.
  • Inform your doctor if you have Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), severe liver or kidney problems, heart disorder, especially as an abnormal electrical tracing (ECG showing prolonged QTc interval).
  • Caution is advised if you were previously infected with both the “Plasmodium falciparum” and “Plasmodium vivax” parasites.
  • Other medicines for the treatment of malaria, especially quinine, halofantrine, mefloquine are not advised to be taken along with lumefantrine.
  • Inform your doctor if you feel your malaria is getting worse, or you feel too unwell or are unable to eat.
  • Women may not breast feed after taking lumefantrine. Breast feeding may be resumed after at least one week post taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or use heavy machinery, if artemether+lumefantrine make you feel sleepy, dizzy or generally weak.

Alcohol
Interaction with alcohol is unknown. Please consult your doctor.
 
Pregnancy
Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
 
Lactation
Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
 
Driving
Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet may make you feel dizzy, sleepy, tired, or decrease alertness. If this happens, do not drive.
 
Kidney
Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.
 
Liver
Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Dose adjustment of Actizo 80 mg/480 mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
No dose adjustment is recommended in patients with severe liver disease.
