Trihexyphenidyl is a muscle relaxing medication. It works by decreasing the activity of excess acetylcholine in the brain. This improves muscle control and reduces stiffness. It helps patients with Parkinson's disease by improving muscle control and reducing stiffness so that they can move more naturally. It is also used to treat movement disorder (restlessness, involuntary movements or muscle spasm ) which can be caused by certain drugs.

Expert advice for Chlorpromazine
Do not use chlorpromazine in children < 1 year unless the need is lifesaving or in children =12 years for the treatment of hiccups. Tell your doctor before taking chlorpromazine if you are suffering from liver or kidney disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, reduced activity of thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), heart disease, raised eyeball pressure (glaucoma), diabetes, tendency to form blood clots or a family history of clotting disorder, pheochromocytoma (high blood pressure due to a tumour near the kidney), or enlarged prostate. Inform your doctor if you have known cardiovascular disease or family history of QT prolongation and if you are taking medicines that may prolong the QT interval. Inform your doctor of other medications that you may be taking for psychiatric disorders, lowering of blood pressure, insomnia, fits, Parkinson’s disease, migraine etc. Do not stop taking chlorpromazine or change its dose without consulting your doctor. Monitor blood glucose regularly while on chlorpromazine treatment, if you are a patient with diabetes Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking chlorpromazine as it may cause drowsiness and visual disturbances. Do not consume this drug if you are allergic to any phenothiazine drug, chlorpromazine or any of its ingredients. Tell your doctor if you are or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

It may be taken before or after meals. If Trihexyphenidyl causes your mouth to dry excessively, it may be better to take it before meals, unless it causes nausea. If taken after meals, thirst can be improved by sucking hard sugarless candy, chewing gum, or drinking water. Inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines to treat glaucoma. Trihexyphenidyl can cause blurred vision or dizziness. Do not drive and or operate machinery if you get blurred vision or dizziness. Inform your doctor if you have trouble in passing urine. Inform your doctor if you have ever been diagnosed with kidney or liver problems.

Take precautions while using trifluoperazine if you are at risk for getting a stroke (paralysis) because of heart disease, diabetes, high blood cholesterol. Do not drive vehicle or operate heavy machinery while taking this drug as it may make you feel dizzy. Do not consume alcohol while taking trifluoperazine as it may worsen the side effects. Consult your doctor before taking trifluoperazine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
